In a decisive move to safeguard digital consumer rights, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, led by Union Minister Shri Pralhad Joshi, convened a high-level stakeholder meeting addressing the rise of dark patterns in online platforms. Emphasizing that today’s consumers are informed and intolerant of digital deception, the Minister urged all major e-commerce players to conduct internal audits and eliminate manipulative design practices proactively—before regulatory action is taken. Highlighting tools like the Jagriti App and Jago Grahak Jago App, developed with IIT BHU, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability in digital commerce. The meeting saw participation from tech giants including Amazon, Apple, Flipkart, Google, and Meta, along with industry bodies and consumer organizations. Officials emphasized that 13 types of dark patterns are now officially regulated under the 2023 guidelines—making India the first country to take such a bold step toward ethical digital interaction.
