In a major step to reduce traffic snarls on the Delhi–Gurugram stretch of NH-48, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is launching trial runs of underpasses and a shallow tunnel on the Dwarka Expressway starting May 29, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM daily. The new infrastructure includes a shallow tunnel connecting Dwarka/Yashobhumi with IGI Airport, and right-turn underpasses that allow smoother movement towards Gurugram (Sirhaul) and vice versa. Travelers from Terminal 3 can also access Gurugram using the airport underpasses in combination with the new route. The initiative aims to streamline traffic, reduce bottlenecks, and provide faster alternative routes to one of the busiest stretches in the National Capital Region. The trial phase will allow NHAI to monitor real-time traffic patterns, test safety mechanisms, and fine-tune operations before the tunnel becomes fully functional from June 5, 2025. The tunnel features modern safety elements including CCTV monitoring, emergency exits, and a dedicated control room, ensuring both security and efficiency for daily commuters. However, restrictions will apply—vehicles taller than 4.5 meters, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and those carrying flammable goods like oil tankers will not be permitted in the tunnel or underpasses. This project is expected to ease congestion around IGI Airport, offering alternate and faster connectivity to key locations such as Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Gurugram, Alipur, and beyond. It also enhances integration with broader corridors, allowing smoother movement towards northern cities like Sonipat, Panipat, and Chandigarh from Gurugram, Faridabad, and Manesar. With the new infrastructure, commuters in Delhi-NCR can look forward to shorter travel times, fewer delays, and a more efficient urban traffic network.
