Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla will lead the Indian Parliamentary Delegation to the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, scheduled to take place in Brasilia, Brazil from June 3 to 5, 2025. The central theme of this year’s forum is “The Role of BRICS Parliaments in Building More Inclusive and Sustainable Global Governance.” The Indian delegation includes Shri Harivansh, Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha; Members of Parliament Shri Surendra Singh Nagar, Shri Vijay Baghel, Shri Vivek Thakur, and Dr. Shabari Byreddy; along with Shri Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary General, Lok Sabha and Shri P.C. Mody, Secretary General, Rajya Sabha. Shri Om Birla will address plenary sessions on key topics including strengthening BRICS inter-parliamentary cooperation, reforming multilateral peace and security frameworks, responsible and inclusive use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and exploring new models for economic development. India is expected to highlight its AI-driven parliamentary initiatives such as ‘Bhashini’, showcasing how technology is being responsibly integrated into democratic governance. Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh will speak on global health partnerships and BRICS cooperation on climate and sustainability. Indian MPs will also join parallel sessions, including the Meeting of BRICS Women Parliamentarians and Meeting of Chairs of International Affairs Committees, on June 3. The Forum will host delegates from BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran—alongside invited countries such as Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan. The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), H.E. Ms. Tulia Ackson, will also be present. The forum is expected to conclude with the adoption of a Joint Statement, and Shri Om Birla may hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other participating nations, reinforcing India’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and global cooperation.
