In a strong statement made in Bogota, Colombia, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor declared that India has suspended the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, citing decades of cross-border terrorism and betrayal of goodwill. Speaking during a multiparty delegation visit, Tharoor emphasized that while the treaty was offered in a spirit of harmony in the 1960s, that spirit has been repeatedly violated. Highlighting India’s restraint despite persistent hostilities, Tharoor said, “India has remained generous in its commitment, even allowing Pakistan water rights beyond the treaty’s obligations. But continued terrorist attacks — including the April 22 Pahalgam attack — have pushed India to act in self-defence.” He revealed that India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure following the deadly attack. Tharoor criticized Pakistan’s inaction, pointing to public funerals for sanctioned terrorists attended by senior uniformed officers as evidence of deep-rooted complicity. Tharoor also expressed disappointment with Colombia for offering condolences to Pakistan after India’s counter-strikes, instead of standing with the victims of terror. The delegation includes leaders from across the political spectrum, representing parties like the BJP, Shiv Sena, LJP, TDP, and JMM, along with former diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu. The Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960 and brokered by the World Bank, has survived multiple wars. But with terrorism still unchecked, India now signals a shift — from goodwill to guarded action.
