The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated a two-day national literary conference titled “How Much Has Literature Changed?” at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre on May 29, 2025. Organized by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Sahitya Akademi, the event brought together prominent writers, scholars, and cultural thinkers to reflect on the dynamic transformation of Indian literature across eras.

In her address, the President expressed deep admiration for literature, recounting her personal connection and respect for litterateurs since her student days. She emphasized that India’s rich linguistic diversity and literary traditions resonate with a shared sense of Indianness, which she considers the soul of the nation’s collective identity. Highlighting the evolving nature of storytelling, President Murmu noted that today’s literature is no longer prescriptive or moralistic, but rather empathetic and experiential—serving as a mirror to society and a fellow traveler in human journeys. She underlined that while literary expressions change over time, their core emotional values like compassion and affection remain timeless.

The conference, aimed at fostering insightful dialogue on modern literary trends, will continue with panel discussions on Feminist Literature in India, the contrast between changing literature and literature of change, and the emergence of Indian writing in a global context. The event will conclude with a tribute to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar on her 300th birth anniversary, celebrating her enduring legacy.
